This pair of bookends is a handmade offering crafted from marble. Marble is among the most celebrated crafting stones, with innumerable properties that are unrivalled by other stone crafts. Before the carving process, the raw marble is sculpted and shaped using a hammer and chisel to bring out the basic form. The craftsman then marks the outline of the design using a compass. Once the outline is marked, he then draws various floral and geometrical designs using a pointed chisel. The craftsman then cuts through these pre-drawn patterns using various grades of flat chisels and hammers. After carving, this marble block goes for further grooving, after which it is sent for polishing or buffing. It is usually done by a buffing machine which consists of a rotating wheel often coated with sandpaper or hard wires made up of brass.
