Makeup Brushes and Sponges

Having the right makeup brushes and sponges is essential to helping you achieve a flawless look every time. Style your makeup like a pro with a blending or contour brush, or create perfect brows with a spoolie brush. The more brushes and sponges you have, the more creative you can get! Check out our quick brushes and sponges guide to get an idea of what you may need in your collection.

Brushing Over the Basics of Makeup Brushes and Sponges

Whether you prefer to use brushes or sponges depends on personal preference and the products you use.

If you regularly use blushes, bronzers and setting powders, loose, dense brushes are a great tool to use. Sponges, on the other hand, work well with liquid and cream foundations, especially when it comes to creating a flawless complexion.

Like makeup, brushes and sponges come in a wide range of different colours and styles. Whether you enjoy fluffy pink marshmallow-like sponges, sleek black or chrome shadow brushes that fit snugly in your hand, or super-soft kabuki brushes for even distribution—there’s something for everyone.

The Different Types of Brushes

Want smoky eyes that smoulder? A shading brush can make it happen! They’re especially handy when it comes to corners and creases, as well as smudging, resulting in a smooth, neat finish each time.

Want to achieve perfect brows? Use an eyebrow brush with an angled head to create a more defined shape. Make featherlight strokes, apply brow wax with ease, and even use it to maximise your lashes.

Paint yourself the perfect pout with a set of lip brushes. With this precision tool, you can colour inside the lines without the risk of smudging and make lips appear much fuller.

A makeup powder brush or sponge can offer different levels of coverage: A sponge can apply foundation much more evenly and provide a naturally dewy finish, while a brush can give you high coverage that lasts all day.

Choosing the Right Makeup Sponge

Silicone sponges (or beauty blenders) can offer an incredible amount of variety when it comes to makeup application. Coming in many shapes and sizes, you can choose a larger blender for foundation and a smaller blender for concealer. Some have flat surfaces while others have rounded edges, helping you to reach those awkward corners.

Caring for your sponges and brushes

Sponges are an affordable and welcome addition to any makeup kit. Absorbent in nature, it’s easy for products to quickly soak into the sponge. A good way to minimise this is to lightly add water to your sponge before adding your product. As with any makeup applicator, you want to ensure your sponges and makeup brushes are clean before and after each use.

Clean your makeup sponges by wetting the sponge with clean water, add some soap, then scrub, rinse and dry.

Your makeup brushes need TLC too, so to keep them fresh be sure to rinse them under lukewarm water and swirl each brush in a bowl of warm water and gentle shampoo. Rinse them off and repeat until the water runs clear. Remove excess moisture and lay them flat on a towel to dry.
